What's New in Etcha: v2026.08

Release notes for Etcha v2026.08.

Deprecations

Features

Locks

Commands can now acquire locks before running. When used with parallel execution, this ensures Commands that can’t be ran concurrently, like apt or dnf, will run sequentially instead.

Macro Commands

Etcha can now parse Jsonnet Commands and Partterns into CLI Macros. You can use this to replace Makefile and other CI/CD processes with Etcha-driven workflows. See Local Workflows for more details.

Parallel execution

Etcha now builds a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) of Commands, allowing Commands to be defined in a list but executed parallel, asynchronously, and more. This flexibility allows you to define groups of Commands that can be ran independently, greatly increasing the execution speed of Patterns.

Enhancements

  • Added etcha diff, can provide text diffs between files and stdin.
  • Added etcha graph, generates a Graphviz or Mermaid diagram of the Pattern or Source Comamnds.
  • Added etcha modified, for comparing and changing last modified timestamps.
  • Added etcha render-jsonnet and etcha render-pattern, replacing etcha render. These commands can be used to debug Etcha rendering.
  • Added Italiano translations
  • Lint now checks Source commands.
  • Lint now checks more non-fatal issues with Commands.
  • Updated Go to 1.26.6

Fixes

Removals

  • onFail has been removed from Commands.
